CHSA Chinese American Migration History Tour
December 29/30, 2004 January 16, 2005 Professor Marlon Hom, Chair of Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University , will again lead this successful CHSA travel-study program to southern China . The program's focus will be on the trans-Pacific Chinese American cultural linkage and ancestral heritage, and will feature Cantonese American ancestral homes and resettlements in the Pearl River Delta. Participants will visit historical and cultural sites pertinent to Cantonese emigration to the Americas .
The tour will consist of site visits to trace the original Cantonese migratory path from Meiling Pass (Tang dynasty, 12 centuries old) and Nanxiong's Zhujixiang Settlement (Song dynasty, 900 years old) in northern Guangdong , to historical sites relevant to Chinese American immigration, such as:
History Museums in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou , and other places
Opium War Memorial & Museum in Humen
1893 Gold Mountain Charity Cemetery in Xinhui
Sun Yatsen Residence & Museum in Zhongshan
Yellow Flower Hill 72 Martyr Memorial ( Canton Uprising) in Guangzhou
Chun Afong (married to a Hawaiian princess) Residence & Exhibits in Zhuhai
Chin Gee Hee (railroad builder from Seattle ) Estates & Moy Clan Esates in Taishan
Xie Weili ( Chicago merchant) Garden Villa in Kaiping for his extended family
Classic North American emigrant villages in Xinhui, Taishan, and Kaiping
Pending time availability, there will also be visits to a few participants' ancestral homes in Toishan/Toshan, Sunwui/Xinhui, or Hoiping/Kaiping, for empirical investigation and observation.
