The Chinese Historical Society of America (CHSA) and the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation (AIISF) are proud to cosponsor the lecture, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE CHINA MAIL STEAMSHIP COMPANY, by Bob Barde, Deputy Director/Academic Coordinator of the Institute of Business and Economic Research at UC Berkeley. He is the co-author of the Immigration chapter of for the Millenial Edition of Historical Statistics on the United States (Cambridge University Press, 2001) and published several articles on early 20th century immigration. The lecture will take place on Thursday, February 12, at 7:00 pm in the CHSA Wells Fargo Foundation Learning Center, located at 965 Clay Street, San Francisco.
In his lecture, Mr. Barde will present the history of the China Mail Steamship Company, which represents one of the few major, long-lived enterprises organized by an immigrant community to transport other immigrants to the United States. Although most Asian immigrants arrived in ships that were either white- or Japanese-owned, the Chinese Mail - established by Chinese and Chinese Americans in 1915 - for seven years transported Chinese and other immigrants across the Pacific into the United States.
Along with examining the events that led to the creation of the China Mail, the operation of the steamship company, and the degree to which it was a "Chinese" enterprise, Mr. Barde will also look at the causes behind its demise.
This lecture begins CHSA's Lecture Series for 2004, held every second Tuesday evening of the month (except for the summer months of July and August). This program is co-sponsored by Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation.
