Creative Spaces is CHSA’s new exhibition program that continues our museum’s mission to incorporate artistic expression within the narrative of Chinese America. Artists, designers, curators and educators are invited to propose unique concepts for interpreting and presenting history in museum spaces. The two artists selected to launch our new project for 2013 are Leland Wong and Leon Sun.

Leland Wong: Chinatown studio
Leland Wong is transforming the CHSA stage gallery into a working artist’s studio. The prolific artist will be a CHSA artist-in-residence, with works-in-progress including photography, painting, t-shirt silkscreening, dumpling making – whatever is on his creative radar at the moment. Wong is an SF Chinatown native and still lives a few blocks away decades later. His artistic focus is on his community – the streets, cafes, and people that have shaped his life and artwork.
Leon Sun: Sculptural Installation
Leon Sun’s sculptural installations are expressions of personal journey and the connection of two worlds. Using CHSA’s museum space as a palette for his art, Sun’s works are narratives of his life experience as a Chinese American.
